In 2008, recognizing the rising need for rehab, Burke Health and Rehab decided to engage Heltzel to assist with the expansion of its rehabilitation gym. Over the next four years, Heltzel led the often complicated effort of working with the Land Use firm and facility staff to obtain approvals, design the new space and oversee construction. The gym was expanded from 900 to 4,200 square feet, incorporating state-of-the-art equipment. The additional space enables Burke Health and Rehab to offer more services and serve their growing patient base.

Noting a dramatic shift in the needs of the homeless in Northern Virginia, Northern Virginia Family Service, which merged with SERVE, decided to make some changes to the shelter. The two-year project, begun in 2010, included renovations of portions of the existing shelter as well as a 4,000 square-foot addition. The addition included eight family room suites, bathroom facilities, and a warm and inviting common space, with a fireplace acting as a focal point to the new design. The renovation enables increased bed capacity, from 60 to 92, enabling more families to be served, matches the changing needs of homeless, and allows families to stay better focused on their goals and work more independently towards housing solutions.
