John F. Heltzel AIA, PC will always consider applications from Architectural Professionals seeking the rewards and challenges of working with an award-winning and thriving small architectural practice.

We are a client-focused architectural design team engaged in various small to mid-sized projects, including religious, restaurant/office/retail/medical tenant improvements, industrial, office/flex and residential single family. Recognized for our creative solutions to a wide range of architectural challenges, excellent rapport with clients, contractors, and building officials, and well-prepared construction documents, our work is sourced almost exclusively by referral and ongoing relationships.

We hire talented designers with strong problem-solving skills, who communicate effectively, are professional, resourceful, and self-motivated. Successful candidates with 1+ year of experience are proficient in AutoCAD or Revit. Those with 3+ years of experience have hands-on experience with small to mid-size projects and a high-level understanding of building codes with respect to design. Those with 6+ years of experience are familiar with the building permit process and local jurisdictional requirements in Northern Virginia, the District of Columbia and Maryland. Ideal candidates will be actively working towards registration or already registered, with the goal of an ownership stake in a small practice.

We offer emerging professionals a comprehensive path to registration and practice management by promoting involvement in all aspects of the design process and architectural practice. Student interns and recent graduates will gain immediate experience with field-measurement and documentation, 3D modeling, and preparation of construction documents, progressing toward opportunities to engage with clients and consultants, develop designs, investigate codes, and perform construction administration duties, further progressing toward independent problem-solving and design. New hires with more applicable experience will be assigned small projects to manage independently with only necessary oversight, progressing toward autonomous project management. We recognize and reward design proficiency, effective project management, and client relationship skills with increased opportunities and pay.

We prefer a professional 5-year or master’s degree in architecture from a NAAB accredited program, but will consider those with a 4-year degree. Applicant must be legally authorized to work permanently in the United States.

Salary and responsibilities commensurate with experience, aligning with the AIA Compensation Report for the South-Atlantic division for larger firms.
